After taking the previous panorama from the parking lot, I hiked out to the middle of Badwater Basin. For those 10 minutes or so, I was the lowest person in North America, standing at 282 feet below sea level. This area is not only the lowest in North America, it's also the driest. What little rain that does fall carries salt minerals out to this pan, and then the water evaporates, leaving behind the salt. After standing here for a few minutes in the 100+ degree weather, I started to taste a salty crust on my lips. Yep, time to head back to my truck for a cold Pepsi!
