This obelisk in north-central Kansas near the small town of Lebanon marks the geographic center of the 48 states.  Before 1959, this site marked the center of the United States but then Alaska and Hawaii were added to the mix, much to the chagrin of the folks in Lebanon – and to the delight of the folks in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

The folks in Lebanon have done a great job with this little park.  There's a picnic shelter/gazebo with several newspaper stories posted about the geographic center, and a small chapel sits nearby.  It's well worth a stop.
